This tiny house on wheels is decked out to the nines with off-grid features, making it livable virtually anywhere. The off-grid dream house, located on a beautiful piece of land in Australia, has solar power, solar water heating, rain water catchment, and even a biogas digester for cooking. The house was built by Paul and Annett, a young couple living in Sydney who wanted to escape the city life while also avoiding the mortgage trap. They built their tiny house on wheels from scratch using solar panels to power their tools. Apart from having all renewable energy systems necessary for off-grid living, the home is also easy on the eyes, and quite impressive for a DIY build.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of the house is its biogas digester, a simple machine that that turns food scraps and water into methane that can be used for cooking, similar to using natural gas or liquid propane. Paul and Annett simply add a liter of water to it along with their food scraps for the day, and then the Sun takes care of the rest. It warms the container, stimulating the growth of bacteria that will feed on the organic matter and convert it to gas. It’s a clever and sustainable alternative to other gas cooking methods that doesn’t produce any waste – quite the opposite.
